Summer + Regression = High Cost to Student
Summer + Regression=High Cost to Student
Just as the words “Winter is coming” strikes fear into the hearts of the good people living in the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones, the words “Summer is Coming” strikes hardship into the hearts of parents of children with special needs.
Regression
Summer can be a difficult time for parents. If their child receives a therapy or multiple therapies or service from their school district, more often than not, those services stop for the summer. For a student to qualify for ESY services (extended school year – runs through the summer months) he must demonstrate regression during the school year. Parents and teachers have argued the difficulty of measuring student regression over a weekend or even a week long break. Unfortunately, regression is very evident when school begins in September after the 8-10 week summer break. The setbacks the student experience is measurable and playing ‘catchup’ comes at a cost.
Not All Students Receive Therapies During the Summer
When a school district concludes they will not be providing ESY therapies or services to a student over the summer months, parents must become proactive to find those therapies or services elsewhere. The first logical place a parent will seek out assistance is through their health insurance company. Many health insurance companies offer a pre-determined number of sessions of a specific therapy; usually 10-12. Once the specified number of sessions have been exhausted through the health insurance company, the specific person who received the therapeutic services have reached their “lifetime” of paid services. Loosely that translates to: the health insurance company will only pay for a specific number of therapeutic services for each individual on the health insurance policy. When the individual has used the maximum number of sessions the health insurance company will not pay for those therapeutic services again for that person’s lifetime.
An Investment for Your Child
Parents then have to find therapists and providers on their own, as well as pay for those services. It is one of the most worthwhile investments parents will make in their child’s life. However, finding therapists and providers can be very difficult. Anne’s Friends was created to assist parents find such precious, highly skilled therapists and providers who will help students continue to strengthen their reading, core strength, speech, manage their anxiety, work on tongue placement and movement, increase desired behaviors, find nutritious foods picky eaters will eat, explore the world around them, and build confidence.
